Project Description

Four Corners Materials recently completed reconstruction work on the Ewing Mesa Road Project in Durango, Colorado, supporting the long-term development of Durango Mesa Park. The project involved constructing a new intersection at State Highway 3 and Ewing Mesa Road and rebuilding roughly 1.4 miles of roadway into the future park site. Work also included installing a new 10-inch waterline running from 3rd Street and 8th Avenue into the park.

The team performed extensive unclassified excavation to establish the roadway alignment, followed by the placement of Class 2 and Class 6 aggregate base, hot mix asphalt paving, drainage improvements, stormwater detention ponds, curbed median islands, guardrail, seeding, mulching, and traffic control. A key component of the project involved a 40-foot auger bore completed in partnership with Canyon Construction. This method allowed crews to safely cross beneath multiple large-diameter storm and raw water lines while reducing the need for deep trenching and protecting existing infrastructure.

Sustainability played a meaningful role in the project’s success. Although recycled concrete base was initially rejected, the Four Corners Materials team demonstrated that the product met all project specifications and emphasized the environmental benefits of incorporating recycled materials. As a result, recycled concrete was approved for use as Class 2 aggregate base, allowing approximately two-thirds of the aggregate placed on the project to come from recycled sources.

The improvements are a key step in advancing the broader vision for the site. The Durango Mesa Park Foundation describes Durango Mesa Park as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest in Southwest Colorado’s economic diversity while preserving open space and our unique quality of life,” noting that “road improvements and other infrastructure are in the works to assure that the land can accommodate people and events.” With the roadway and supporting infrastructure now complete, the project helps lay the groundwork for a future multi-use park that will serve the Durango community for generations.
